The Jim Lackey Catalina Classic Race

The Jim Lackey Catalina Classic was started in 2018 when Jim Lackey decided he wanted to race his boat in a One Design fleet.  So, alongside the PHRF fleet in the Coastal race from Dana Point to Oceanside, he got 2 other boats to race back. The following year in 2019, there were 4 Cat 27s.  But then in 2020, things were catching on and it seemed like there might have been 5 or 6 boats interested in this race.  Jim also decided to add the Catalina 30 boats to the Catalina Classic due to interest from other Cat skippers. I think Jim found the perfect blend of cruising up to Dana Point with the other cruisers and then a fun race back with the race fleet.

Sadly, our long time OYC member, skipper, friend, and mentor Jim Lackey passed on March 3rd of this year.  Let’s keep growing the Catalina Classic!
