Windsurfing Festival Recap
The 2024 Chesapeake Windsurfing Festival was held this past weekend at the Gibson Island Point Beach!
Windsurfer and foiling sailors enjoyed sporty conditions as GIYS hosted a one-day event for an enthusiastic group at the point. A southerly 8-10 knot breeze shifted early in the morning and built to a 20-30+ knot breeze out of the west and northwest. At one point, the group paused early in the afternoon for a BBQ and to wait for the winds to calm a bit before holding our only race of the day.
As the group rigged and sailed, we saw residents stop by to see the action off the beach and talk with sailors on shore. Congratulations to all sailors! Click here to see the results online.
Thank you Tom Sargent, Joe Fernon, and Rebecca Graham for your help on race committee!
Event Background and Looking Ahead to 2024...
The Chesapeake Windsurfing Festival was born from the Annapolis Windsurfing Festival, which started at Severn Sailing Association in 2019. After the last one in 2021, I started working to move the event to the Mountain Point Beaches which are ideal for windsurfing. Junior Fleet started a windsurfing program four summers ago and the hope is to see our sailors participate in next year’s CWF. At the moment, we are working to schedule the next festival to attract the most local sailors. Stay tuned!
In the meantime, click here to enjoy the pictures and short videos of the fun from last weekend.
