Welcome to 2019 Women on the Water Sonar Sailing Series!

It's time to dust off our gear and head back to the water! Come join Chicago Yacht Club's Women on the Water group for a series focused on enjoyment, and bettering the skills of Women Sailors. This series will be taught on Chicago Yacht Club's fleet of Sonars. The Sonar is a perfect keelboat for pros and beginners alike! An evening on the water, class will be followed by time in the classroom and dinner!

IMPORTANT PLEASE READ ALL INFORMATION:

Registration can be done in one of two ways: by individual class, or for the entire series as a whole. If you wish to register for the entire series, please go to the session titled "WOW Series Package". If you wish to register for individual sessions, please select and register for which week you would like to attend. We highly encourage registering the entire series in order to maximize your experience. The classes are designed to be progressive and to suit a beginner, intermediate, and advanced sailor. For the advanced sailor, the goal is to be prepared to test for the Chicago Yacht Club Sonar Certification by the end of the series. This will allow members to be eligible for the Sonar Rental Program. The curriculum is progressive in nature. Throughout the series we will follow the US Sailing Keelboat Curriculum and address these following topics: sailing concepts, knot tying,  Sonar rigging, safety and emergencies, proper sail trim, racing tactics, docking, close quarter maneuvering, crew communication, boat handlings skills, navigation, as well as identifying wind direction. Upon completion of entire series, you are eligible to test for the Chicago Yacht Club Sonar Certification. 

In order to best serve you and provide adequate Coaching coverage you are required to confirm whether or not you will attend by 5:00 pm CST of the Tuesday  of the week’s class. If you do not confirm we cannot guarantee that you will be able to participate and refunds will not be offered.

Competency Level:

In order to help us best place you among your peers, please take a look at the descriptions below, and pick the level that speaks to your skill level. 

Green circles:  Novice sailors who are looking for an introduction to the Women on the Water program and the social aspect of sailing. We will cover how to rig a Sonar, leave and return to the dock, points of sail and enjoy a cruise on Lake Michigan.

Blue squares:  Our next step in the WOW process.  This is for returning sailors who would like to hone their sailing skills.  We cover more advanced sail trim, boat handling, and onboard communication. Our Blue Square fleet will learn to fly the spinnaker and perform each of the associated crew positions, along with intermediate maneuvering. 

Black diamonds: Those advanced sailors within our WOW program will work on spinnaker skills, close quarter boat handling, and advanced seamanship.  At this point you should know how to rig, leave the dock and return to the dock.  The goal for the series is to get to a point where you are properly prepared to take the Chicago Yacht Club Sonar Rental Program Certification.
